Miniature Micro Switches

A miniature micro switch, also known as a snap-action switch, is an electrical switch activated by minimal force or movement. It’s used across various electronic devices for its reliability and precision. These switches find broad usage in electronics like 3D printers, phones, alarms, and more due to their small size and versatility. They come in different types—ultra-miniature, sub-miniature, lever types—offering various configurations, current ratings, and actuator mechanisms. These switches typically have single-pole double-throw (SPDT) configurations, allowing one input to control two different circuits. They are reliable for logic and low-power switching applications. Miniature micro switches vary in size, including sub-subminiature options, making them adaptable to diverse electronic designs.

Miniature Micro Switches Actuator

A microswitch actuator is a small mechanical device used to control the operation of a microswitch. It activates the switch by applying a physical force, often through a button, lever, or plunger, which triggers the electrical circuit. These actuators are commonly used in appliances, machinery, and control systems for precise and reliable switching with minimal force.

Miniature Micro Switches Characteristics

High Sensitivity: Can be triggered by minimal force or displacement.

Short Actuating Travel: Rapid changes in contact state between contacts.

Wide Variety: Internal structures come in hundreds or even thousands of types, classified by volume, protection performance, breaking form, breaking capacity, operating environment, and other criteria.

Long Mechanical Life: Depending on usage requirements, the mechanical life of the switch can range from 30,000 to 10 million cycles.

Miniature Micro Switches Working Principle

The working principle of a microswitch is mainly based on mechanical movement and electrical conduction. When the button is subjected to external force, it compresses the spring and moves the contacts, changing the contact state between them and thereby controlling the on-off state of the circuit. Specifically, when the button is not subjected to external force, the contacts are in an open state; when the button receives sufficient external force, the contacts close, allowing the circuit to conduct electricity; when the external force disappears, the spring returns to its original position, the contacts open, and the circuit is disconnected.

Miniature Micro Switches Application Areas

Microswitches are used for automatic control and safety protection in equipment that requires frequent circuit switching. They are widely applied in the following fields:

  • Electronic Devices: Such as computer mice, automotive mice, communication equipment, etc.
  • Instrumentation: Used in various testing instruments.
  • Mining and Power Systems: For automatic control and safety protection in related equipment.
  • Household Appliances: Such as gas water heaters, gas stoves, small household appliances, microwaves, electric rice cookers, etc.
  • Electrical Equipment: Used in building automation, power tools, and other equipment.
  • Military Applications: Such as aerospace, aviation, ships, missiles, tanks, and other equipment.

• Complete the soldering at the iron tip temperature below 350°C within 5 seconds, and do not apply any external force for 1 minute after soldering. Soldering at an excessively high temperature or soldering for more than 5 seconds may deteriorate the characteristics of the Switch.

• Be sure to apply only the minimum required amount of flux. Switch may have contact failures if flux intrudes into the interior of the Switch.

• If the PCB terminal models are soldered in the solder bath, flux will permeate inside the Switch and cause contact failure. Therefore, manually solder the PCB terminal.

• Use M2.3 mounting screw with plane washers or spring washers to securely mount the Switch. Tighten the screws to a torque of 0.23 to 0.26 N·m {2.3 to 2.7 kgf·cm}.

• Mount the Switch onto a flat surface. Mounting on an uneven surface may cause deformation of the Switch, resulting in faulty operation or breakage in the housing.

Using a model for ordinary loads to open or close the contact of a micro load circuit may result in faulty contact. Use models that operate in the following range.

However, even when using micro load models within the following operating range, if inrush current occurs when the contact is opened or closed, it may increase the contact wear and so decrease durability. Therefore, insert a contact protection circuit where necessary.

The N-level reference value applies for the minimum applicable load. This value indicates the malfunction reference level for the reliability level of 60% (λ60).
(JIS C5003)
The equation, λ60=0.5×10-6/operation indicates that the estimated malfunction rate is less than operations with a reliability level of 60%.
